Rhythm Poetry
I have had great success with rhythm poetry. The students find poems with strong rhythm (I usually bring in a dozen or so possibilities and allow them to bring others). Working in groups, they use balls, jump ropes, rhythm instruments--whatever they want--to work up a performance of one poem. We take several days to practice (we used the school parking lot as a practice area!). I've had the classes perform their poems on the school stage for other classes, and some have been asked to perform for school assemblies.
